Job Description
A Pharmacy Technician will help a licensed pharmacist to prepare medications, complete administrative duties and provide customer service. You will receive requests for medication, label bottles and count tablets. You may also be asked to stock shelves, answer phones and operate cash registers. Your duties may vary based on State regulations and rules.
Work Environment
Most technicians work in areas which are clean and organized. They are well ventilated and well lit and a great deal of time will be spent on your feet. The schedule of a pharmacy technician varies depending on location. Most will require that you work nights and weekends as well as holidays. You may even be required to pick up overnight shifts especially if you work in a hospital pharmacy. Part time opportunities are available if you choose this option.
Training and Education
If you choose to pursue a career in this field, in most cases you will need a minimum of a high school diploma. On-the-job training is offered in many cases although employers prefer those who have formal training as well as certification. On-the-job training takes anywhere from three to twelve months. If you wish to pursue a formal program, many are offered. These programs may be found in hospitals and the military or you may find one at a community college or vocational school. Programs of this type take from six months to two years to complete.
Pharmacy Technician Certification
Most states now require that you register with the State board of pharmacy. In order to register, minimum requirements must be met and you must pay an application fee. This does vary from state to state so be sure to check with the board of pharmacy where you will be working. Certification is also offered and two organizations provide this. Choose from either the Institute for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. You must sit for an exam with either organization and this is not required, but can increase employment opportunities.
